Black Borrachero- Numbskull (2nd August 2019)

WORDS: Ray Mondo

Coming right off the heels of their recently released debut EP, Glasgow's new-grunge trio Black Borrachero return with their newest and quite possibly even huger-than-usual-sounding single 'Numbskull'; recorded and produced by the band's very own guitarist/vocalist Nick Fisher and drummer Chris Goldie.

The track begins with a more-than-menacing bassline, with guitar feedback setting the stage and clearing the way for a drum sound so powerful it could practically move mountains. This is all topped off with the band's already trademark thick and grimy guitar riffing; somewhere between the fast looseness of early Queens of the Stone Age and the in-your-face abrasiveness of bands such as Nirvana and the Melvins. Fisher's smooth melodic vocals take the forefront for a few bars, as bassist Scott Reid continues laying down an addictively catchy low end on bass. Drummer Goldie as always rocks the percussion with ease.

Wild and furious-sounding guitar sludge comes back into the picture with perfect timing, and when it all comes together you can feel yourself almost being pulled into a time portal back to the 90s, where riffs were loud and summer days seemed endless. Just when you think it couldn’t get any heavier, things come back into even fuller force with grungy riffs so filthy sounding, you'll be wanting a shower to freshen up once it's all done. Or perhaps even a bath for that neck once you're done undoubtedly headbanging.

With the amount of attitude and pomp that 'Numbskull' has up its sleeve, the band will no doubt be getting listeners rocking out at home as well as getting the punters moving when they pull this one back out for their live shows. If you haven’t been able to catch them yet, you’re in for a treat.
